Who We Are

John Arthur, Mari Powers, and Robin Ashton are students in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Westminster College. All three earned their bachelor degrees in English. They are united by their shared passion for teaching and the desire to shape the minds and lives of children.

Mari and her husband J.C. are the lucky parents of two cute and lively children who keep their parents very busy. They have moved to Utah from New Jersey and are enjoying exploring this Rocky Mountain state. Mari plans to teach English on the high school level. By effectively teaching language arts and literature, Mari's goal is to educate students about different cultures, beliefs and values. Through the process of studying those who are different, students will learn that people are not all that different from each other. This will help develop tolerance and acceptance of all people. This knowledge will help cultivate critical thinking skills and broaden a student’s horizons.

Robin and her husband Laird are the parents of seven children who have excelled in the academic world and are moving on to their own professional careers. They also have seven grandchildren and one on the way. Robin is planning to teach elementary school and likes all of the grades. Robin desires to utilize the many technological tools that she has learned about in this class. Webquests, Inspirational organizers, PowerPoints and a classroom blog will be high on her priority list. To teach in a manner that helps all children achieve their highest academic potential in an environment that is warm and accepting is her vision for the kind of teacher that she wants to be.

John is known throughout our cohort as the kindest and the best! He is always ready to serve whoever is in need. He hopes to teach fifth or sixth grade and with his guitar in hand and his sincere desire to help all children, he will be an asset to whatever school is lucky enough to hire him. His vision as a teacher is simple -- encourage his students work hard while making the work feel like play.
