Do Computers Belong in the Classroom?

Few educators would question the positive role that computers can play in education. Most claim that ready access to computers in K-12 classrooms has a beneficial effect on educational outcomes. These proponents believe computers will make the classroom a better environment in which to teach the difficult concepts that lead to higher academic achievement (Johnson, 2000). But are classroom computers delivering on this expectation? Does access to a computer or use of a computer in instructing students improve their academic achievement?

  1. I believe that computers are an undeniable asset in our classrooms. As research tools they are hard to beat, and the opportunity to play games is an incentive for students who finish their work early. However, I'm inclined to believe that computers are overrated as a means of boosting academic achievement. Just as I don't believe completing worksheets makes a student better at math, I don't believe completing a series of exercises on a computer makes a student better at anything, no matter how engaging the characters or digital landscape. Computers are indispensable as a source of information or entertainment, but when it comes to increasing academic achievement nothing beats hard work, a strong teacher, and meaningful lessons.

  2. I believe that computers are a great asset in the classroom if the teacher is well trained in their most effective usage. There are sixth grade classrooms in some schools where every student has a computer. These teachers are specially trained and I think this would be an exciting class to be in. Most classrooms have only a few computers and I believe there should be a minimum of five or six in such classes so that there are enough computers for a group to work together on a project. We have seen what a valuable learning tool a Webquest can be, and classroom blogs and the creating of PowerPoints can be creative learning tools as well. Because there is a universe of information on the web, computers can be an exciting avenue for learning. In a controlled environment students can learn how to find answers to their questions and enhance whatever subject they are studying in class. A computer is definitely the learning tool of the future in our hands right now and it seems only right that we help our students use it responsibly as a great learning tool.

  3. Computer can be an essential learning tool to all students. Children in Special Education Programs and with Learning Disabilities can benefit greatly from various learning programs available on computes and on the internet. Computers can be used as rewards for children who complete work on time. They can also be used by children who complete work early and have free time. The internet is valuable research tool that children should be taught to use effectively to find information applicable to current lessons to enhance the learning experience. However, every child does not need to be equipped with a personal computer, personally, I feel that to be a bit excessive. Computers should not take the place the good teaching, lesson planning and pedagogy. In short, when used appropriately computers can be a valuable teaching aide. Finding a balance between technology and traditional teaching methods is the key to successfully integrating technology into the classroom.
